FASHION PLATES

The Civil War Ladies got their dress design and decoration ideas from the Fashion Plates in their monthly periodicals such as Godey's, Peterson's, Frank Leslie's, Graham's and Harpers. These were American ladies magazines that came in the mail. The women also received magazines from Europe such as Le Bon Ton.

Some of the Fashion Plates were hand tinted before being bound into the periodicals. Other pictures of dresses and accessories were Black and White. The dresses in these pictures were very much overdone, with too many ruffles, ribbons, and puffs. They were just ideas. Civil War women knew that and just took one or two ideas from their Fashion Plates.

Now you can use the same sources of inspiration for your own outfits. Or else just frame these Fashion Plate to put on the wall.

All pictures exactly match the originals, including some of the stains and browned paper. They are printed on heavy paper.
